Fort Bend Food News — Week of September 2, 2012

Wow, I can’t believe September is here already!  To wrap up August, I introduced a new periodic feature called “Sweet Tooth” to highlight some of the yummy desserts around town.  The first Sweet Tooth column was on the Ying & Yang Crepe at Guru.  I also reviewed Shiva Indian Restaurant this week.

And now on to the news…

First, if you didn’t have a chance to participate (or you want to increase your participation) in Houston Restaurant Weeks, many restaurants have extended their special menus through Labor Day weekend.  For a complete list of restaurants still participating this weekend, click here.  In our area, Aura, Churrasco’s, Perry’s Steakhouse (all locations), Post Oak Grill and Tradicao are still offering HRW menus.

Eater Houston blog is running a series called “Front and Center” to spotlight some of the hard-working servers around Houston who truly excel at the art of good customer service.  One entry focuses on Jeff Rainey of Flying Saucer Draught Emporium.  Though the article primarily talks about the downtown Houston location, there is a short discussion about the Sugar Land location as well.

Hank on Food paid a visit to Guru Burgers & Crepes and had a great meal.  The Pancho Burger sounds yummy — will have to try that one soon!

There has been quite a bit of buzz about Fort Bend Brewing Co. recently, with articles in, Houston Business Journal,, and

Sugar Land Magazine tells us to save the date of October 28th for the 10th annual Taste of Sugar Land event, benefiting East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry, Fort Bend Family Promise and Fort Bend Habitat for Humanity.  The event will be held at Safari Texas in Richmond, beginning at 4:00 p.m.  Guests will have the opportunity to sample bites from over 20 different participating restaurants and caterers.

Post Oak Grill in Sugar Land is hosting a Halloween bash and costume contest on October 27th from 7:00 p.m. – midnight.  Your really excellent costume could win you a cash prize!

Openings Alert!  Crawfish Heaven and Brooklyn Pizzeria are now open in Missouri City.  Crawfish Heaven is located at 6210 Highway 6 at University Boulevard, next to Kroger.  Brooklyn Pizzeria is located at 4717 Highway 6 at Dulles, next to Star Cinema Grill.

Finally, I’m a board member of the Literacy Council of Fort Bend County.  September is National Adult Literacy Awareness Month, and several area restaurants are participating in the Literacy Council’s “Dining Out Loud” benefit.  Participants include Jason’s Deli, Pepperoni’s, Mia Bella Trattoria, Chili’s, Raising Cane’s, and Panera Bread.  Click here for details!
